Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Nicholas Esser, and you’re listening to the six-one-four chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Hilliard, Ohio. Today we’re talking about something that I hear about almost every single day in my practice — neck and shoulder tension from sitting at a desk. And if that sounds familiar to you, I want you to know… you are not alone. Not even close.

Here’s the thing. We were not designed to sit for eight, nine, ten hours a day staring at a screen. Our bodies are built to move. And when we don’t move — when we stay locked in that same hunched-over position for hours at a time — our muscles and joints start to send us signals. Tension headaches. That tight, burning feeling across the tops of your shoulders. That stiffness in your neck when you try to look over your shoulder to back out of a parking spot. Sound familiar? Yeah. That’s your body talking to you.

Now let me break this down a little bit. When you’re sitting at a desk, especially looking at a screen, there’s a really common pattern that happens. Your head starts to drift forward. Just a little bit at first. But over time, that becomes your new normal. And here’s what’s interesting about that — for every inch your head moves forward of your shoulders, the amount of stress on your neck roughly doubles. Your head weighs around ten to twelve pounds. But when it’s sitting two or three inches forward of where it should be, it can feel like twenty, thirty pounds to the muscles holding it up. All day long. That’s exhausting work for those muscles, and they will let you know.

At the same time, your shoulders start to round forward too. Your chest gets tight. Your upper back gets weak. And all of a sudden, everything from your mid-back all the way up to the base of your skull is working overtime just to keep you upright. That tension isn’t just uncomfortable — it can start to affect your sleep, your focus, even your mood.

So what can you do right now? A few simple things. First — move more. I know that sounds basic, but setting a timer to get up and walk around for just two or three minutes every hour can make a real difference. Second — check your screen height. Your monitor should be roughly at eye level so you’re not looking down all day. If you’re working on a laptop, consider a stand or an external monitor. Third — work on your posture awareness. Pull your shoulder blades back and down, gently bring your chin back over your shoulders, and take a few deep breaths. You don’t have to hold perfect posture all day — just reset yourself regularly throughout the day.

Those simple habits can really help keep things from getting worse. But here’s what I want you to understand. By the time most people come see me, the tension and the stiffness has been building for months — sometimes years. The body is incredibly adaptable. It will compensate and adjust and keep going. But eventually, those compensations catch up with you. And that’s when the pain shows up, or the headaches become more frequent, or you just feel like you can never fully relax your shoulders no matter what you do.

That’s where chiropractic care comes in. As a chiropractor, I’m looking at how your spine is moving, where the restricted joints are, and how that’s affecting the muscles around them. When we restore proper movement to the joints in your neck and upper back, your body doesn’t have to work as hard to hold you up. The muscles can finally let go. A lot of patients tell me they feel lighter after an adjustment — like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. And honestly, that’s not too far from the truth.

If you’re dealing with neck tension, shoulder tightness, headaches, or that general feeling of carrying the weight of the world up in your traps — come in and let us take a look. We are right here in Hilliard, and we would love to help.
